What Is a Mexican Burrito

Mexican burritos are a beloved classic dish that packs your favourite Mexican flavours in a big, delicious wrap. A burrito is a Mexican wrap, a flour tortilla filled with delicious ingredients like black beans and meat fillings. The fillings are customisable, and you can use your favourite meat dishes, vegetables or condiments to achieve the desired flavour profile. Some burritos are served wet, covered in savoury or spicy sauce. If you are hosting your friends over, why not serve hot burritos as a snack? Make sure to get the following ingredients.
Tortillas: Burrito wraps are usually in the form of soft flour tortillas. The tortillas are made from wheat instead of corn, as wheat can accommodate the large size of wrap required. When you use wheat tortillas, you can easily fold their ends and wrap the fillings. Corn tortillas would break and crumble when you try to fold them. If you are making a burrito bowl, you don’t need tortillas.
Burrito filling: Use your favourite burrito fillings to build the taste. Slow-cooked shredded beef or pork has a great texture and is quite tasty. While various meats are the obvious fillings, roasted vegetables like butternut squash, potatoes, or peppers are exceptional burrito fillings.
Beans: Classic Mexican burritos have refried pinto beans, but black beans can do the trick. Pinto beans have a creamier texture compared to black beans. Add flavour to the beans by boiling them in your favourite broth. A pinch of salt and garlic or onions enhances the taste of the beans.
Rice: While rice is optional, we recommend adding it to your burrito. It gives it more texture and makes it extra filling. You can use cooked white or brown rice without any seasoning or add flavour with cilantro and lime.
Salsa: Your burrito is incomplete without salsa or avocado. For an authentic Mexican burrito, use classic pico de gallo, which is made from chopped-up Roma tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, lime juice and salt. A layer of guacamole or avocado adds to the flavour, especially if the guacamole has jalapeno peppers.
Cheese: A Mexican burrito isn't the same without shredded cheese, but the type of cheese you add is up to you. You can stick to cheddar cheese or use mozzarella and creamy Monterey Jack for a gooey quality.

How to Make Chicken Burritos

Mexican chicken burritos are a great way to enjoy flavourful chicken. Some of the steps for making homemade chicken burritos include:
Make the chicken: Season your chicken with salt and pepper. Heat some oil at medium temperature in a pan, add the chicken and cook it for a few minutes. Remove the chicken and heat up more oil to saute the onions, bell peppers and garlic. When the vegetables become tender, add the chicken and let it simmer on medium-low heat until it’s fully cooked and falling apart. Put the chicken in a bowl and shred it with a fork.
Assemble the ingredients: Prepare the fillings for the burrito by cooking rice in chicken broth and preparing the refried beans. Spread the raw tortillas and start pilling the vegetables, refried beans and chicken. The fillings should be juicy but not watery to ensure the burrito doesn’t become soggy. Don’t forget to add grated cheese on top.
Roll up the burrito: Tuck the ends of the burrito in and roll the tortillas tightly. Brush both sides of the rolled-up tortilla with olive oil and bake it until golden brown. You can also pan-fry the tortillas instead of baking them.
