How and what we eat has an important impact on the environment. Over the past few years, an increasing number of Kiwis have adapted their diets with this impact in mind. This is the practice of mindful eating. According to New Zealanders, there are many simple and achievable ways to live more sustainably when it comes to food purchases and consumption. 77% of New Zealanders suggest reducing food waste, whilst 15% have already began to introduce a plant-based diet.
Hannah Gilbert says, "Following a flexitarian or plant-based diet is a great step towards helping place less stress on the planet. A dietary shift toward plant foods is vital for promoting the health of our environment and helping reduce greenhouse-gas emissions." A plant based diet is great for increasing your daily vegetable intake, with plants and veggies being a source of essential nutrients, which overall help support your immune system.
As Kiwis become more knowledgeable about what they eat and how it impacts their overall health, diets begin to change. Over the last few years, 62% of respondents have changed their diet to benefit their overall wellbeing with 44% considering adopting a plant-based diet for health benefits.
